Common Myths About Recruiters

August 19, 2026

There seems to be some confusion about the role recruiters play in the hiring process. Simply put, a recruiter's primary responsibility is to find qualified candidates, screen applicants, and help start the interview process.

Many people have probably asked themselves:

"Why work with a recruiter if my company already has an HR department?"

Think about it this way…

Imagine you're a hiring manager for a large retail chain. Every month, you're responsible for filling dozens of positions ranging from retail associates to C-suite executives.

How do you manage that?

You could build a talent acquisition department from the ground up, investing valuable time, money, and internal resources into creating a recruiting team.

Or you could partner with an experienced, proven staffing firm that already has the expertise, network, and processes in place to deliver qualified talent.

Every organization has its own culture, values, and priorities. We understand that trusting an outside partner can feel like a leap of faith, and you want to know the people being presented truly fit your organization.

That's why we wanted to clear up a few of the most common misconceptions about the recruiting industry.

Myth #1: Recruiters make the hiring decision.

FALSE

Recruiters don't make hiring decisions, the employer does.

At JMS, we carefully screen candidates to identify those who best match the role and the company's needs. Once we've found qualified candidates, they're presented to the client, who conducts their own interviews and ultimately decides who to hire.

Myth #2: AI screens every resume before a person sees it.

FALSE

While technology can help organize applications, we believe every candidate deserves human consideration.

Each person brings unique skills, experiences, and strengths that can't always be measured by software alone. That's why we prioritize human evaluation throughout our screening process whenever possible.

Myth #3: Recruiter fees reduce your salary.

FALSE

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in recruiting.

Our fees are paid by the employer as part of the hiring process, they are not deducted from a candidate's salary. While our fee may be calculated as a percentage of the position's salary, it is completely separate from what the candidate earns.

Myth #4: Recruiters only care about filling jobs quickly.

FALSE

Speed is important, but quality is what matters most.

A great placement isn't just about filling an opening, it's about finding the right long-term fit for both the candidate and the employer. Taking the time to thoroughly evaluate each opportunity leads to stronger hires, happier employees, and lasting partnerships built on trust.

While we can’t speak for every staffing firm out there, we can confirm that these myths have no place at JMS.
